With the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games all wrapped up, many fans of international sporting events will be shifting their focus to the 2022 Beijing Games coming this winter. However before then, Japan, the hosts of the “Pandemic Summer Games”, will hold a pair of world class sporting events this month. The 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will start this Monday, October 18th and run until Sunday, October 24th. This will then be directly followed up by the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships taking place from October 27th to 31st, in the very same city.

The 2021 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (Oct 18th-24th)

Just like the Tokyo 2020 Games, the 2021 Artistic World Championships have had to go through tremendous twists and turns to get to the point of actually taking place. The event was originally planned to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. However due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Danish Gymnastics Federation decided against hosting the event and announced their withdrawal in early July of last year.

The International Gymnastics Federation then desperately began looking for a new potential hosts. And it wasn’t until November 8th that it was announced that the hosts of the 2021 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships, the Japanese city of Kitakyushu, would host both events, making history by becoming the very first city to do so.

The 2021 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships (Oct 27th-31st)

Unlike the countless other sporting events that have had to play Twister to bend and maneuver their way around The Covid-19 Pandemic, the 2021 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships has been relatively unaffected. Kitakyushu was always meant to be the hosts of the games, and unlike the spectatorless Tokyo 2020 Games, there will be an audience in attendance for The World Championships (both artistic and rhythmic). Of course this will only be Japanese residents, with only coaches, support staff and few international media being accepted. Approximately 180 contestants from 47 countries will participate.
